Let’s be honest, this is what we all want as Entrepreneurs. In any industry that you are in, especially your professional life, to be more successful would mean so much. Your Mentor should gain a certain pride in helping you become the best version of yourself. That’s why they are doing it in the first place. To be able to give back is something in Humans that feels just as good as receiving.
The last thing you need is to create more problems, lucky for you Mentors are great at solving them. They can ask the questions needed to help you solve even those biggest things that are holding you back. Mentors are thinkers, a huge aspect in your career as sometimes it takes looking from the outside when the inside is full already. Let them declutter those negative thoughts to help you to succeed.
Mentors can be tremendously helpful in laying out possible options you can pursue, or the directions you might take in your career, or in life. But ultimately, the decisions are entirely up to you, and the responsibility for the consequences of those decisions lies in your hands. You need to be challenged daily in the life of an Entrepreneur or you won’t grow and neither will your business.
My best mentors have been the ones who have challenged me. They’ve pushed me to question my assumptions about my abilities and potential; urged me to set my sights on higher goals; and held me accountable for reaching them. If you can find a Mentor that can see the things in you that you don’t, you are going to flourish in your business.
Sometimes all you need is to be guided in a certain direction. One that’s away from your current path and along the way that allows you to grow, learn, and benefit. It’s in this that your Mentor will know which direction to point you but still should allow you to find your way. They aren’t going to do your job for you but they should be able to see your strengths and weaknesses, then be able to act on that to set you up for success. When you reach that fork in the road, your Mentor will push you to make a choice, trust that choice and go.
A few thousand miles to the east of ancient Greece, the Chinese philosopher Laozi said, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Mentors are often the ones who give you the courage to take that first step into the unknown. It’s scary to be on your own as an Entrepreneur and taking that leap of faith is not as easy for some. That’s why you need to surround yourself with like-minded people and it should start with a Mentor. They’ve been in your shoes and know what to do and not do.
So take that moment you deserve and think about who can be a Mentor for you. It can be someone in your life now. Maybe also someone in your business network. .
